Detailed Solution

The Dalits and Muslims demanded separate electorates, which the colonial government granted in 1932. 'Separate electorates' means a certain number of seats in an electorate will be allocated to a particular community, and only voters belonging to the specific community can elect a representative from the same community. But Mahatma Gandhi vehemently opposed it because he felt this would divide already diverse Indians further and weaken the national movement. He successfully convinced the Dalit leader B. R. Ambedkar to swap separate electorates for reservation, but not the Muslims.
