Best Growing Conditions for Rajma Plants

Rajma (Kidney Bean, Phaseolus vulgaris) is a leguminous crop that requires specific conditions to thrive. Success in cultivation depends on providing the right climate, soil, water, and sunlight.

• Climate and Temperature: Rajma is a cool-season crop and is very sensitive to frost. It grows best in areas with mild temperatures. The ideal temperature range for growth is between 15°C and 25°C. Temperatures above 30°C can lead to flower drop and poor pod formation. It cannot tolerate frost at any stage of its growth.
• Rainfall and Water: The crop requires an average rainfall of 50 to 75 cm, well-distributed throughout its growing period. It is crucial to have adequate moisture during germination, flowering, and pod-filling stages. However, rajma plants are highly susceptible to waterlogging, so proper drainage is essential. Excessive rain during flowering can damage the flowers and reduce yield.
• Soil Type and pH: The best soil for rajma is well-drained, light-textured loam or sandy loam, rich in organic matter. Heavy clay soils that retain too much water are unsuitable. The ideal soil pH is in the range of 6.0 to 7.0 (slightly acidic to neutral).
• Sunlight: The plant requires full, direct sunlight for at least 6 to 8 hours a day. Ample sunlight is necessary for healthy vegetative growth and good pod development.
