Between December 1946 and November 1949, some 300 Indians had a series of meetings on the country's political future. This "Constituent Assembly" met in New Delhi, although its members came from all around India and various political parties. As a result of these deliberations, the Indian Constitution, which went into effect on January 26, 1950, was drafted. The new country needed to build a governmental system that would best fulfil the people's aspirations and needs. The constitution was the topic of various debates throughout its creation, but India, a newly independent nation, eventually adopted it.
