Detailed Solution

From Bombay to Thane, the first railway line was laid in India. The British government needed to spread railways to transport vast quantities of raw materials, reach markets and move imperial troops. Lord Dalhousie, Governor-General of the time, planned an elaborate programme to lay railway tracks all over the country, reaching the far-off regions. The first railway line connecting Bombay with Thane was built in 1853. After that, the railway network expanded rapidly. The British government successfully laid about 25,500 km of railway track by 1890. It connected various parts of the country via a broad railway network. However, the spread of railways affected the forests adversely because of increasing demands for wood.
