Bharatiya Janata Party is a national party. The Election Commission of India has laid out certain criteria for a party to be recognised as a national party. The Bharatiya Janata Party is one of the eight political parties that fulfil the criteria and is, thus, recognised as a national party. The BJP was formed in 1980 and is a revamped version of Bhartiya Jana Sangh. One of the important elements of this party is cultural nationalism, or "Hindutva". The party wants to establish modern India by drawing inspiration from ancient Indian cultural traditions. In addition, the party has certain basic objectives, such as implementing the Uniform Civil Code. The Bharatiya Janata Party is the leader of the National Democratic Alliance.
