The BJP was founded in 1980. The Bhartiya Janata Sangh, founded in 1951 by Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, seeks to build a strong and modern India by drawing inspiration from India's ancient culture and values, as well as resurrecting Dayal Upadhyay's ideas of integral humanism and Antyodaya. Cultural nationalism is an important component of its concept of Indian nationality, and politics seeks the full territorial and political integration of Jammu and Kashmir with India, a uniform civil code for all people living in the country, regardless of religion, and a prohibition on religious conversion. Its support base increased substantially in the 1990s. Earlier limited to the North and West and to urban areas, the party has expanded its support in the southeast and northeast.
