Bharucha's Greek name was Barygaza.
The oldest habitation in Gujarat is in Bharucha, also considered the state's oldest city. Due to the Romans' adoption of the Greek term for this, Bharucha was also known as Barygaza. According to folklore, the name was taken from a sage named Bhrigu, one of Lord Brahma's ten sons. Chinese explorers discovered that Bharucha's success depended on or was related to the city's export commerce, and this important port city began to decline after the seventh century.
