Detailed Solution

The Bhopal gas tragedy occurred due to Air pollution.
An industrial accident caused the Bhopal gas tragedy. It occurred in the Indian city of Bhopal, a subsidiary pesticide facility of Union Carbide. The plant leaked 42 tonnes of harmful methyl isocyanate gas on December 1-2, 1984, exposing people to poisonous chemicals and causing severe air pollution. The catastrophe occurred due to water getting into a tank storing methyl isocyanate. This resulted in a chemical reaction that, among other things, led to a lot of carbon dioxide accumulation. The ensuing response caused the tank's inside temperature to rise to more than 200 °C (392 °F). However, the tank was not designed to sustain the pressure. Instead, the pressure in the tank might be managed through valves. In an emergency, these were activated, lowering the pressure. Large quantities of hazardous gases were consequently released into the atmosphere.
