Black soil is also known as cotton soil because it is ideal for growing cotton. Cotton crops need a lot of moisture. The black soil is made up of fine clay particles which retain a high degree of moisture. This soil is found in the Deccan trap region spread over the northwest Deccan plateau and comprises lava flow. It expands in the southeast direction along the Godavari and the Krishna valleys. They cover the plateaus of Maharashtra, Malwa, Saurashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Chattisgarh.
