Buddhism is a long-standing Indian religion that Gautama Buddha founded between the sixth and fourth centuries B.C. His primary messages focused on the suffering that arises from wants in humans and the importance of achieving nirvana, or salvation, through one's self-following of the road of Buddhahood. Bodhisattvas are those who adhere to Buddhahood as their road to enlightenment. They walked around encouraging and guiding others. They withdrew and meditated in peace once they had attained enlightenment. It became common practice to worship these bodhisattvas in China, Korea, and Central Asia.
