Bolivia's people displayed their determination against the privatization of water.
The privatization of water was a significant event in the history of Bolivia. Bolivia's water conflict is most famous as "The Cochabamba Water War" because it was a considerable movement in Cochabamba, the country's third-largest city. The protests took place from December 1999 until April 2000. This demonstration was held in opposition to the privatization of Semapa, the city's municipal water supply corporation, at a time when it was required to build a dam that had been long planned. To obtain money for the dam's development, the private corporation Aguas del Tunari, a joint venture with Bechtel, hiked the water tariffs. In defence of water and life, a popular movement that was essentially a community alliance led the protests at the time. The movement, which had begun in earnest in January, came to an end in April 2000. The national government took swift action. Bolivia's people's determination finally paid, and the government removed the heavy tariffs.
