Detailed Solution

Bombay province was separated into two different regions, one being Marathi-speaking and the other being Gujarati-speaking, in 1960. In accordance with the States Reorganisation Act, Bombay state was reorganised on linguistic lines as of November 1st, 1956, incorporating several areas, including Saurashtra and Kutch States. Gujarat has a majority Gujarati-speaking population, and Maharashtra has a majority Marathi-speaking population. Bombay state was reorganised along linguistic lines in response to protests of the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement, in which 107 people were killed by police.
