Both Ramanuja and Shankara propounded the idea of One Supreme God.
Shankara was an influential philosopher from Kerala. He was an enthusiastic advocate of Advaita (the doctrine of the oneness of the Supreme God and the individual soul, which is the Ultimate Reality).
He emphasised that the Ultimate Reality was formless. According to him, the world is an illusion (Maya), and one must renunciate it and follow the path of knowledge to attain salvation.
Ramanuja, from Tamil Nadu, was deeply influenced by the Alvars. According to him, Vishnu is the Supreme God and devotion to him would lead to salvation. He also emphasised the doctrine of Vishishtadvaita (qualified oneness- even after unification, the individual soul remains distinct). His doctrine inspired Vaishnavism.
