.BR Ambedkar was a Dalit leader who established Depressed Class Association. He raised the demand for a separate electorate for the depressed classes, which was accepted by the British. However, Gandhiji opposed the idea of separate electors as it would delay the process of national integration. He went on fast unto death in opposition to a separate electorate. Ultimately, Ambedkar agreed to the terms of Gandhiji. Thus Poona Pact of 1932 was signed between the two, which ensured reserved seats for days in an election with the general electorate.
