The brain stem of the human brain consists of midbrain, pons and medulla oblongata. The brain stem is a vital part of the central nervous system that connects the brain to the spinal cord and controls essential functions necessary for survival and maintains consciousness. For example, it helps in the regulation of basic functions such as breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, and digestion.

(2) The brain stem does not include the forebrain. It includes the midbrain and the hindbrain, excluding cerebellum.

(3) The thalamus and the hypothalamus are the parts of the forebrain.
