Detailed Solution

A physical change is defined as the change which occurs in the physical properties of the substance, like its shape, size, colour, volume etc. On the other hand, a chemical change is a change in the substance's chemical composition, leading to the formation of a new product with different characteristics from the original substance. In this case, breaking a log of wood doesn't change the identity of the wood, but only its size. So it is a physical change. However, while burning, the wooden log would convert into ash. Hence making it an irreversible process. So it is a chemical change.
