Detailed Solution

Britain turned to India for cotton supplies by 1860. Cotton supplies to British textile mills during the American Civil War (1861-65) decreased, which led to increased production elsewhere in the Empire. Cotton was a major import throughout the 1860s, supplying Britain's booming textile factories. America supplied the majority of the raw cotton supplies. However, there was no longer any growing or shipping of raw cotton throughout the American Civil War (1861–185). The British looked to India for their supply needs when they wanted to locate fresh supplies for their mills.
