Detailed Solution

Britain’s trade surplus in India also helped pay the so-called ‘home charges.’
With India, Britain had a trade surplus. With other nations, from which Britain was importing more than it was exporting, Britain exploited this surplus to offset its trade deficits. India made a significant contribution to the world economy in the late nineteenth century by aiding Britain in reducing its deficits. The so-called ‘home charges,’ which included private remittances home by British officials and traders, interest payments on India's foreign debt, and pensions for British officials in India, were also financed in part by Britain's trade surplus with India.
