The pastoral community underwent many changes during the British colonial administration. Everything changed, including their old way of life and government. But only a tiny portion of the community suffered as a result. The British colonial government appointed a chief to each sub-group to oversee the Maasai community. This caused the ancient system of elders and warriors to disintegrate. Over time, these selected chiefs amassed wealth. They acquired lands, livestock, and money by lending it to people with a tax that had to be paid. They also started to live in towns and trade with their regular income. The Chief received both pastoral and non-pastoral earnings. Their family lived in the desert region and took care of animals.
