Buffer stock and the Public Distribution System are two main components of the “Food security” system. The two main components of the Food security system are Buffer Stock and the Public Distribution System (PDS). Buffer stock is the stock of food grains like wheat and rice procured by the government through the Food Corporation of India. The government creates a buffer stock of food grains to distribute the food grains at a low price to the people who cannot afford them in the food deficit areas of the country, where the price is normally high. PDS refers to a system in which the food procured by the FCI is distributed through government-regulated ration shops among the poor section of society.
