Weavers faced different issues around the turn of the 19th century. Indian cotton weavers encountered two problems as the cotton industry grew in England:
Their export market failed, and the local market shrunk due to a British product oversupply. Indian handicrafts could not be compared to the English exquisite machine-made items. They encountered a new problem by 1860. After the first World War, they could not obtain an adequate supply of raw cotton shipped to England for their industries. The cost of raw cotton skyrocketed, forcing Indian weavers to purchase it at exorbitant costs. They were typically unable to make the payments. India underwent industrialisation at the end of the 19th century when companies started making machine-made clothing. Additionally, this decreased the market's supply of raw cotton.
