The Indian countryside was in unrest by 1930.
Two forces affected Indian politics in the late 1920s during a period of internal debate and division between Moderates and Extremists within Congress. The first was a result of the global economic recession. After 1926, agricultural prices started to decline and eventually collapsed. Peasants struggled to sell their crops and make ends meet as the demand for agricultural products fell and exports decreased.
In light of this, the newly elected Tories in Britain established a Statutory Commission headed by Sir John Simon.
