Detailed Solution

The reaction of H2S with KMnO4 is a redox reaction in which both reduction and oxidation processes are taken place.

Reduction of Mn (VII) to Mn (II) is:

Mn+7O4-+8H++5e-Mn2++4H2O ....(1)

Oxidation of S from -2 to 0 is:

H2S-22H++S0+2e- ....(2)

The final reaction is obtained by multiplying reaction 1 by 2 and reaction 2 by 5 and then adding both the reactions.

2MnO4-+5H2S+3H+2Mn2++5S+8H2O
