By September, Gaddis shepherds of Himachal Pradesh come down from the high meadows. Like a typical pastoral community, they are always on the move in search of pastures for their herds. They took up residence in the low hills of the Siwalik range in winter, grazing their flocks in the scrub forests. From April, they started moving towards the north, stopping at Lahul and Spiti for the snow to melt and then ascending to the lush meadows of the higher mountains, known as Dhars. The return movement began by September and would be back to the winter grazing grounds of the Siwalik hills.
