By the 1750s, the trade network, controlled by Indian merchants, was breaking. Before the dawn of machine industries, Indian silk and cotton items dominated the international textile market. Cotton of higher quality was frequently imported from India. This export trade network involved various Indian merchants and bankers financing production, transporting commodities, and supplying exporters. Supply merchants provided a link between the port communities and the interior regions. They made advances to weavers, purchased woven cloth from weaving villages, and transported it to the ports. By the 1750s, this network, which Indian merchants controlled, was crumbling. European corporations steadily consolidated control, obtaining a range of concessions from local courts, then monopolistic trading privileges. As a result, the traditional ports of Surat and Hoogly, through which local merchants had operated, deteriorated. Exports from these ports declined drastically, credit that had previously financed earlier trade began to dry up, and local bankers gradually went bankrupt.
