By the 1980s, several political organisations were formed in Sri Lanka demanding an independent region of Tamil Eelam. After Sri Lanka secured its independence from the British in 1948, the leaders of the majority Sinhala community in Sri Lanka tried to assert their dominance over the country. Numerous majoritarian measures were undertaken to provide preferential treatment to the Sinhala-speaking population. Although many people spoke Tamil, it was completely disregarded, and Sinhala was recognised as the official language. All this caused the Tamils to be frustrated as their interests were being ignored. As a result, they banded together and demanded an independent Tamil Eelam (state).
