Detailed Solution

By the mid-19th century, Richard M.Hoe had perfected the power-driven cylindrical press in New York. A cylindrical press is a form of the printing press in which the paper is rolled against a printing surface laid on a flat, often horizontal reciprocating bed by a revolving cylinder. Richard M Hoe made ongoing improvements to the cylindrical presses to increase output speed, quantity and quality. He replaced the flatbed press with a rotating cylinder, which evolved into the Hoe rotary, or "lightning" press, which was patented in 1847. This machine, which could print 8,000 pages per hour, was mostly used to produce newspapers. On the rotary press, images were imprinted by a rotating cylinder, allowing faster, more efficient and higher-quality printing.
