By the mid-19th century, Richard M.Hoe had perfected the power-driven cylindrical press, which is a form of the printing press in which the paper is rolled against a printing surface that is laid on a flat, often horizontal reciprocating bed by a revolving cylinder. Richard M Hoe made ongoing improvements to the current cylinder presses to increase output speed, quantity and quality. His ideas were implemented and they altered printing operations. He replaced the prior flatbed press with a rotating cylinder, which evolved into the Hoe rotary, or "lightning" press, which was patented in 1847. This machine, which could print 8,000 pages per hour, was mostly used to produce newspapers.
