By the mid-19th century, None of these had perfected the power-driven cylindrical press. Richard March Hoe (born September 12, 1812, in New York; died June 7, 1886, in Florence) was an inventor who developed and produced the first successful rotary printing press. He had considerable creative talent and continuously improved contemporary cylinder presses to increase production speed, quantity, and quality. The application of their ideas revolutionised the printing process. He rejected the old flatbed press, placed the model in a circular cylinder, and finally, the patented 1847 model, which was developed as a hoe rotary or "lightning" press. The Philadelphia Public Ledger was first used in 1847, producing 8,000 sheets per day. The printed bell is on one side. It was further improved under the name Hoe Webb Perfecting Press, first used by the New York Tribune and printed at 18,000 sheets per hour on both sides. Joyce Press enabled publishers to meet the increasing demand for newspapers.
