By which process do plants consume nitrogen gas from the air?

Plants do not consume nitrogen from the air directly. The bacteria present in the soil and roots of some plants have the ability to absorb nitrogen from the air and then convert it into ammonia for further use by plants. This process is known as nitrogen fixation.
