Most societies have been dominated since ancient times by males. For communities that have been built for a long time based on subordination and domination, it is not a simple matter to recognise that all individuals are equal. In historical times, most societies were male-dominated. It was after a long struggle that women could achieve their long-lost right of respect and equal treatment, which stands to be a necessary ingredient for democracy. But once this principle was recognised, it became way easier for women to raise their voices against the things which are unacceptable, like male domination, unequal wages and other discriminations based on gender, and the absence of political rights. In a non-democratic setup, this unacceptability would not have a legal basis because the principle of individual freedom and dignity is not recognised.
