Detailed Solution

Seth Hukumchand, a Marwari businessman, set up the first Indian jute mill in Calcutta in 1917. Seth Hukumchand was a pioneer in the "Swadeshi Industry," establishing cotton mills (Hukam Chand Mill and Raj Kumar Mill at Indore) and a sizable jute mill and iron mill in Calcutta. He was the first businessman from India to establish a jute mill. There was a sufficient labour force and ample coal for power in Calcutta, and the metropolis was flawlessly positioned for shipping to world demands; hence, it was the best place to set up the jute industry.
