${\mathrm{C}}_2{\mathrm{H}}_5\mathrm{OH}$ and ${\mathrm{C}}_6{\mathrm{H}}_5\mathrm{OH}$ can be distinguished  by

${\mathrm{C}}_2{\mathrm{H}}_5\mathrm{OH}$ and ${\mathrm{C}}_6{\mathrm{H}}_5\mathrm{OH}$ can be distinguished by neutral ${\mathrm{FeCl}}_3$ solution or ${\mathrm{I}}_2+\mathrm{NaOH}$ solution. 

${\mathrm{C}}_2{\mathrm{H}}_5\mathrm{OH}$ gives iodoform test with ${\mathrm{I}}_2+\mathrm{NaOH}$ solution while phenol does not give yellow ppt. of iodoform.

${\mathrm{C}}_2{\mathrm{H}}_5\mathrm{OH}+4{\mathrm{I}}_2+6\mathrm{NaOH}\stackrel{∆}{\to }\underset{\mathrm{iodoform}}{{\mathrm{CHI}}_3}+\mathrm{HCOONa}+5\mathrm{Nal}+5{\mathrm{H}}_2\mathrm{O}$

${\mathrm{C}}_6{\mathrm{H}}_5\mathrm{OH}+{\mathrm{I}}_2+\mathrm{NaOH}⟶$No reaction

${\mathrm{C}}_2{\mathrm{H}}_5\mathrm{OH}$ reacts with neutral ${\mathrm{FeCl}}_3$ solution to give purple colour while ${\mathrm{C}}_2{\mathrm{H}}_5\mathrm{OH}$ does not give any colour with neutral ${\mathrm{FeCl}}_3$ solution.
