Detailed Solution

Atoms can neither be created nor destroyed by any physical or chemical method. They can only be transformed from one form to another.

An element is a substance made up of only one type of atom. Since atoms cannot be destroyed in chemical or physical reactions, elements also cannot be broken down into simpler substances. If we try to break an element, we only get atoms of the same element, not a new substance.

For example, water is a compound made of two elements: hydrogen and oxygen. Water can be broken down into these two elements. However, hydrogen and oxygen themselves cannot be further broken down into simpler substances.

Conclusion: Elements cannot be broken into simpler substances.
