Detailed Solution

Current Status of Medical College Migration

Migration Facility Has Been Discontinued: As per the latest guidelines issued by the National Medical Commission (NMC) in May 2024, the facility for migration or transfer from one medical college to another has been prohibited under all circumstances. This means students admitted to a medical college are no longer allowed to migrate to another institution during their MBBS course.

Previous Migration Rules (Now Withdrawn)

  • Earlier, migration was allowed only after passing the first professional MBBS examination and before the start of clinical courses.
  • Migration was permitted on genuine grounds such as serious health issues, death of a parent, or physical disability.
  • Migration was subject to availability of seats in the receiving college and restricted to a maximum of 5% of the sanctioned intake of that college.
  • Migration between colleges within the same city was not allowed.
  • Students had to obtain No Objection Certificates (NOCs) from both the current and receiving colleges and their respective universities.
  • Applications for migration had to be submitted within one month of the declaration of first-year MBBS results to the relevant authorities.

Important Points on Migration Process (When It Was Allowed)

  • Migration was possible only if both colleges were recognized by the Central Government.
  • The student had to undertake to complete a minimum of 18 months of study in the new college before appearing for the second professional MBBS exam.
  • Migration was not permitted during the clinical phase of the MBBS course.
  • The final decision rested with the Director of Medical Education of the state or the Medical Council of India (now NMC).

What This Means for Students Now

  • No Migration Allowed: Students must complete their MBBS course at the college where they initially took admission.
  • Plan Carefully Before Admission: Since migration is no longer an option, it is crucial to choose your medical college wisely during counselling.
  • Exceptions or Special Cases: There are currently no official provisions for migration or transfer under any circumstances.
