The "shadow" is the dark patch formed behind an opaque object exposed to light.

Here consider a cylinder.

If the top or bottom surface of a cylinder is held towards the light source then we get a circular shadow.

If the curved surface of the cylinder is held towards the light source then we get a rectangular shadow.
