Capacitation refers to the changes which a sperm must undergo before it can fertilize an ovum.
Capacitation is a process by which sperm become capable of fertilising an egg. It occurs after sperm have been ejaculated from the male body into the female reproductive tract. During this process, the sperm undergoes several physiological changes, including loss of cholesterol and glycoprotein from the plasma membrane of the sperm head, activation of enzymes necessary for penetration of the egg and an increase in the motility of the sperm. These changes prepare the sperm for the final steps in fertilisation. Only the sperm that has undergone capacitation can fertilise an egg.
