Captain William Hawkins and Sir Thomas Roe of the East India Company established the first English factory at Surat.
After obtaining authorisation from the Emperor of England in 1609, Captain William Hawkins and Sir Thomas Roe of the East India Company travelled to India. They went to Jahangir's court, who was on the throne then, to ask for permission to set up a factory at Surat. However, due to opposition from the Portuguese in 1611, the mission to establish a factory in Surat failed. In 1613, Jahangir finally permitted the English to establish a factory in Surat.
