The incoming solar radiation that falls on the Earth’s surface heats it, while a small proportion is reflected back by the Earth’s surface in the form of infrared radiation. Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide absorb a major fraction of it. The molecules of these gases radiate heat energy, a major part of which again comes to the Earth’s surface, thus heating it up once again.
