Detailed Solution

(i) Let,

E =

student has failed in Economics, M student has failed in Mathematics P(E)=50100=12,P(M)=35100=720

and P(EM)=25100=14

The probability that the selected student has failed in Economics if it is known that he has failed in Mathematics. Required probability =PEM

=P(EM)P(M)=14720=14×207=57

(ii) Now,

The probability that the selected student has failed in Mathematics if it is known that he has failed in Economics.

Required probability =P(M/E)

=P(ME)P(E)=1412=12

Therefore,

(i) The probability that the selected student has failed in Economics, if it is known that he has failed in Mathematics, it follows

P(EM)=57

(ii) The probability that the selected student has failed in Mathematics, if it is known that he has failed in Economics, it follows

P(ME)=12
