Endodermis is the innermost layer of cortex that encircles the stele. It has compactly arranged barrel shaped cells without intercellular spaces. The radial and transverse walls have ligno-suberin thickenings called casparian thickenings as part of primary wall in the form of a ring. Since it has suberized walls it acts as barrier between cortex and stele for the movement of water.
