Cell theory is not applicable to:

 viruses are considered an exception to the cell theory. The cell theory states that all living organisms are composed of one or more cells, which are the basic structural and functional units of life. Cells arise from pre-existing cells through cell division.

Viruses, however, are not considered living organisms by many definitions because they lack the cellular structure and metabolism necessary to be considered truly alive.
