Detailed Solution

Central Maharashtra has black soil. The plateau region of India, extending in a triangular shape from south of river Narmada to Kanyakumari, is rich in the black soil of volcanic origin. The Deccan plateau covers the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, and Tamil Nadu. Black soil has water retention properties, making them suitable for the cultivation of crops like cotton, tobacco, sugarcane, millets, pulses, castor, linseed, and citrus fruits. The soil is rich in minerals and has a fine texture. The black soil, formed by the disintegration of igneous rocks and the solidification of lava, is also known as lava soil.
