Some weaver communities had a better chance of surviving the competition from mill industries.

Coarse fabric producers: Some weavers specialised in producing coarse cloth, while others wove the better types. The impoverished purchased the coarser cloth, and its demand varied wildly. They could not purchase clothing during low harvests and famine when the rural poor had little to eat, and their monetary revenue dried up.

Producers of finer types: Because the market for the finer varieties purchased was by the wealthy, it was more steady. Hence the producers of the finer varieties were in a stronger position. Even when the people went hungry, the wealthy could afford these. The selling of Banarasi or Baluchari sarees was unaffected by famines. Additionally, mills could not imitate specialised weavers. The production of mills could not easily replace saris with woven borders or Madras's well-known lungis and handkerchiefs.
