Champaran Satyagraha (1916) was launched by Gandhiji against Indigo planters. Gandhiji redressed the grievance of the cultivators who were oppressed by the indigo planter. The cultivator's condition was very miserable because the farmers were protesting against having to grow indigo with barely any payment for it. This made the condition of cultivators miserable. Many tenant farmers were forced to grow some Indigo on a portion of their tenancy. Later, when synthetic dyes were invented cultivation of Indigo was abandoned.
