Champaran Satyagraha was related to indigo cultivation.
At the time, Gandhi's first nonviolent resistance was conducted on the land of Motihari inside the Champaran district. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi successfully organised Satyagraha activities across India once he arrived. However, he witnessed peasants in Northern India being oppressed by Indigo planters. So in 1916, he travelled to Champaran, Bihar, to rally farmers against the offensive land system. Hence Champaran became the first location in Gandhi's Indian independence campaign. Many utilised farmers were required to plant indigo on the part of their land as a condition of their employment below colonial legislation. This indigo was used in the assembly of dyes.
