Detailed Solution

Changing one's political allegiance from the party with which one was elected (to a legislative body) to another is known as defection.
To prevent elected MLAs and MPs from switching parties, the Constitution was amended. This was carried out because numerous elected officials engaged in defection to become ministers or receive financial incentives. According to current legislation, any MLA or MP who switches parties will lose their position in the legislature. Defection has decreased thanks to this new regulation.
