Chateaux were attacked during peasant revolts in the countryside in France in 1789. In July 1789, while the National Assembly was busy at Versailles curbing the absolute authority of the monarch, the rest of France was wracked with a wave of peasant revolts. Peasants started hearing rumours about lords or nobles hiring brigands to destroy their ripe crops or property to bring them to their knees in July. In response, many peasant communities armed themselves to defend their property. But others became paranoid and decided to attack the nobles before they were assaulted. The residences of noblemen, called chateau (pl. chateaux), were attacked and looted, and documents containing records of land holdings, feudal contracts, and feudal dues were burnt down, and sometimes the entire residence was alighted.
