Chauri Chaura is a town in Uttar Pradesh, India, close to Gorakhpur.
The settlement is situated on the State Highway between Gorakhpur and Deoria, 16 kilometres from Gorakhpur. 25 kilometres to the southeast of Gorakhpur Junction is the town railway station. When police opened fire on many demonstrators who had taken part in the non-cooperation movement as part of the Indian freedom fight, the Chauri Chaura incident occurred in the town in 1922, resulting in the deaths of at least 22 police officers.
