Begum Zinat Mahal was sent to prison in Rangoon.
Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal emperor, was convicted in court and sentenced to life imprisonment. In October 1858, he and his wife, Begum Zinat Mahal, were imprisoned in Rangoon. Bahadur Shah Zafar died in the Rangoon jail in November 1862. The recovery of Delhi, however, did not mean that the insurrection was over. People continued to resist and fight the British. The British struggled for two years to suppress the huge forces of popular resistance. Finally, Lucknow was captured in March 1858. Rani Lakshmibai was defeated and slain in June 1858. A similar destiny awaited Rani Avantibai, who chose to embrace death after initially defeating the British at Kheri.
